One of my favorite parts of creating the brick and mortar NATURAWL - New England Seasons & Traditions shop has been searching for pieces that tell the story of old New England homes.
Two weeks ago, I found one that I absolutely fell in love with, a 19th century antique dry sink.
For many years before indoor plumbing became common, dry sinks were an essential part of everyday life. Families carried water into the home by hand and used a basin placed inside the dry sink for washing dishes, preparing food, and countless daily chores. Many were built with a zinc-lined top to help protect the wood from water, along with drawers and cupboards for storing kitchen essentials.
Today, they're a beautiful reminder of a simpler time.
As soon as I saw this one, I knew it belonged in the NATURAWL Pantry.
Its warm wood, original zinc work surface, and years of honest wear are exactly the kind of craftsmanship and history I hope to celebrate throughout the shop. Soon, its shelves will be filled with thoughtfully gathered goods inspired by the seasons and traditions of New England—from stoneware and wooden kitchen tools to locally made soaps and pantry treasures.
I can't help but imagine the stories this dry sink could tell.
While its days of serving a family kitchen may be over, it now begins a new chapter, welcoming visitors to NATURAWL and reminding us that the most beautiful homes are often filled with pieces that have lived a life before us.
